Salt Deposits of Cabo Rojo

The Taíno Indians who lived there, baptized as Saint Helena, were enslaved and used as labor. Some historians argue that this was the first experimental agricultural station on the Island. The vegetables brought from Europe were introduced there and those grown on the Island were improved. By the end of the 16th century, Toa Baja had a growing agricultural and livestock activity. The Ribera del Toa attracted numerous settlers during the century who arrived in the region due to the richness of their floodplains and abundant fishing.

Learn About Toa Baja History

Toa Baja was founded in 1745. Toa Baja is known as La Ciudad Bajo Aguas (the underwater city). The name of this municipality comes from the Taíno toa word that means “mom” and that was the original name of the La Plata River, while the word “low” refers to the large areas of flat land that characterize the territory of Toa Baja. The settlement area was known as the Ribera de Toa Baja and was classified as a village. On the banks of the Toa, place of the yucayeque of the Aramaná chief, Juan Ponce de León established the Granja del Rey
