Isla de Gilligan
Guánica, Puerto Rico
Perfect for snorkeling FUN

Gilligan Island is the adopted nickname of this tiny island but the official name of the Island is Cayo Aurora. Cayo Aurora forms part of the Natural Biosphere Reserve of Guánica. The Gilligan Island is formed by two cays covered with mangrove trees. In between the division of the cays there is a two canals division, this is the part that makes the Gilligan island a very fun place for snorkeling and exploration.
In order to come to Cayo Aurora you would need to take a boat. There are some options to begin your trip with: take a small Ferry on a close by restaurant, rent a kayak or rent a watercraft. This trip on boat would take a commute of 5 to 7 minutes. On Kayak the trip time would take close to 30 minutes. It doesn't count with a beach access but it have some facilities that would make your day more comfortable.
Cayo Aurora have a boat pier to receive all the visitors, is large deck where you can make your walk into the Gilligan Island. Also it have been added a roped area for establishing limitations in the harbor in order to keep watercraft out of the island canals or the popular areas used for swimming. Once you step in island you would find some Gazebos, cement BBQ's and composting bathrooms. It have some information related with the reserve and natural wonders. It is not accesible for inland exploration and I do not recommend to do it, you may wake up some hungry mosquitos.

The water visibility is excellent most of the time and the waters are very shallows on the division close to the beginning of the canals and the pier. The canals are formed by the mangrove trees and in that trees is where our little friends live. You would see a lot of colorful fishes in their natural habitat. The Department Of Natural Resources put some structures under water in order to increase the fish population. It is a very nice place to do some snorkeling, even for kids
There are nothing to drink or eat in the island, so bring everything that you may need to spend your day. Bring some insect repellent, toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Do not forget your snorkeling gear and some floaters (they came very handy). There are no showers, lifeguard or other commodities. Remember is a cay and a natural protected reserve by the government.
The Ferry do some trips back and forward to the island. The Gilligan Island gets very crowded on weekends and popular holidays, our recommendation is to get early and spend half of the day on it and if its possible come other day beside Monday (it is closed).
Cayo Aurora (Gilligan Island) is a beautiful cay with some beautiful sea life. It is family friendly, great for some snorkeling and just lay on your floater and go around the canals. You are going to have a great time!

Imagine yourself in an island with lack of conveniences that we have on the main island, I mean no stores, no technology and no social influences. This is the kind of things that I appreciate from life, live the moment and appreciate every creation from life. Just sit down, listen to the sounds of the wave, feel the sand in your feet, be in clear waters and wonder your eyes with life in living colors. Thanks God for this Life!
